Description

The MMSR is a self-contained 3D radar intended for target acquisition purposes in medium and short range air defence systems. Originating from the LOARA antiaircraft system, where high demands for target acquisition were essential, the MMSR features comparatively high average power to provide sufficient coverage on small-RCS targets and high ECCM performances.

The MMSR is based on a cross-country vehicle chassis, but its mechanical design makes it easily adaptable for installation on other carriers. The antenna is elevated for operation to ca. 3.5 m above the ground by means of a hydraulic drive, and folded down for cruising. Four hydraulically operated jacks are used for levelling and stabilising the vehicle during operation. The vehicle is equipped with a land navigation system combining dead recon navigation, based on a high precision gyro, and GPS data, so the radar position is constantly updated and north alignment is immediate upon arrival at a new site. The power generator is installed on a two-wheeled trailer that is towed by the vehicle.

The radar operator's workstation is placed in the driver's cabin, consisting of a portable computer (notebook) and additional control panels. The operator can watch target tracks and BITE alarms and control radar operation on his display. If the need arises, he can also access the radar equipment set-up to check and adjust some parameters. Additional control panels are placed on the operator's left side, enabling to control radar antenna deployment and operate the communication equipment.
