Target acquisition and identification by the search radar

It takes typically 4 antenna scans to automatically start tracking a new target. A graphic symbol is assigned to a newly initiated track and displayed together with its number on the commander's or operator's monitor, the symbol shape indicating whether a friendly or hostile aircraft has been detected. This is the target acquisition phase, which can be performed when the vehicle moves.

Situation analysis and target-engagement decision

Following the computer aided threat evaluation on his display, the commander designates the target that has to be engaged. The target coordinates and velocity vector are sent to the fire control computer (FCC). At the same time, the tracking-head operator chooses which sensor shall be used for engaging the target, and the driver is given a command to stop the vehicle.

Target intercept for tracking

The FFC controls the turret drive and the turret is slewed to an azimuth which is within the tracking head horizontal scan limits. The tracking head is then driven to intercept the target. In this mode, the tracking head scans small azimuth and elevation sectors around the designated target direction and searches for the target within a narrow range gate at the designated target range. Once the target has been detected by the active tracking sensor, the whole tracking system locks on the target and switches over to the tracking mode.

Target tracking

The target is automatically tracked, its position in azimuth, elevation and range precisely calculated. In this phase, the turret and guns are continuously aimed at the lead direction predicted from the target track parameters and ballistic calculations.

Opening fire

After the target has entered the gun fire zone, fire is opened at the commander's order. Short or long bursts can be fired, with the required type of ammunition fed from the magazines according to the need.
